Model 548 by Astep. Light as a modern gesture.
Designed in 1951 by Gino Sarfatti, Model 548 encapsulates a way of understanding lighting in which technology is not concealed, but becomes expression. A table lamp that explores balance, reflection and the perception of light with an almost mathematical clarity and, at the same time, a deeply poetic sensibility.
Its structure responds to an essential principle: directing light with precision to create soft, controlled atmospheres. The spotlight projects light onto a reflective screen, generating a balanced combination of reflected and diffused illumination. A subtle interplay that transforms light into architectural matter, capable of accompanying a space without imposing itself.
Balance, reflection and perception.
The large diffusing screen, available in orange, yellow, blue, grey or white methacrylate, is key to this visual dialogue. It not only modulates the light, but also introduces a sophisticated, almost scenographic optical effect that alters the perception of the whole. The white-lacquered aluminium spotlight, the brass tube with polished or dark burnished finish, and the small counterweight, also in brass, form a structure in perfect balance, where every element has a precise function and a clear formal rationale.
In Astep’s re-edition, Model 548 remains faithful to the original design, discreetly incorporating an LED light source and an integrated optical dimmer. Technological innovation is added without altering the initial gesture, respecting the logic and elegance of the project.
The relevance of a modern classic.
Model 548 proves that timeless design does not rely on nostalgia, but on coherence. When form is born from function and detail is resolved with intelligence, the passage of time does not weaken the object, it confirms it. A lamp that remains contemporary because it was conceived with rigour, experimentation and a deep sensitivity to light.
A piece that perfectly embodies Astep’s spirit: recovering icons of modern design and bringing them back to the present with respect, precision and a contemporary outlook.
Responsible design, made to last.
As part of its commitment as a certified B Corp, Astep has reviewed and redesigned each of its pieces to meet more demanding environmental impact standards. This process has involved a thorough re-engineering of the product, aimed at maximising its lifespan and ensuring that every luminaire is fully repairable. A conscious way of understanding design: not as an ephemeral object, but as a lasting presence, conceived to accompany the user over time and reduce the need for replacement.
