SpongeDome! by Pott Project. A new form for the Sponge Family.
SpongeDome! is the latest addition to the Sponge family by Pott Project. Designed by Miguel Ángel García Belmonte, it takes the collection’s distinctive language as its starting point and translates it into a new form: a ceramic dome that surrounds the light source and projects its illumination into the space.
Its body retains the irregular perforations that identify the Sponge family, created using a technique developed by Miguel Ángel García Belmonte and his team. The small openings allow light to pass through, creating a changing interplay of light and shadow across the surface.
The domed form gives the piece a more architectural and sculptural presence. Suspended from above, it takes on a different scale and allows light to be projected both downwards and through the perforations, creating a warm, enveloping glow.
A technique of its own.
The Sponge family was born from an exploration of clay as a material that can be illuminated. SpongeUp!, SpongeOh!, SpongeRo! and now SpongeDome! share the same technique, but each piece interprets it through a different form.
The perforations are much more than an aesthetic device. They are an integral part of how the luminaires work, turning the ceramic surface into a filter for light. Each opening is created irregularly, ensuring that no two pieces are exactly alike.
This technique emerged from the research developed by Miguel Ángel García Belmonte and makes it possible to work with clay from a contemporary perspective, combining the know-how of traditional pottery with experimentation around the material.
The result brings together two ways of understanding the process that coexist naturally at Pott Project: the knowledge rooted in tradition and the constant search for new possibilities for clay.
Clay as a finish.
SpongeDome! is available in natural clay, leaving the texture and colour of the material fully visible. The surface needs no coating to conceal its characteristics; clay is part of the identity of the piece and also shapes the way it receives and reflects light.
Within the Sponge family, each finish creates a different perception, while all maintain that direct relationship with the earth and the making process. The material is not disguised: it is revealed.
Sponge, a family that keeps growing.
With SpongeDome!, Pott Project expands the possibilities of a collection that has spent years exploring the relationship between ceramics, light and perforation. The sphere now gives way to a dome, giving the luminaire a more vertical and architectural presence while maintaining the recognisable language that connects the entire family.
The new form demonstrates how the same technique can give rise to very different pieces when the way the volume is worked changes. SpongeDome! continues an exploration that began with the material itself and keeps finding new ways to make clay illuminate.
