Krysset: a Norwegian icon defined by its crossover elegance

Mar, 2025 • 1 Min. Read

Eikund's modern Krysset armchair represents a true icon of Norwegian design characterized by its distinctive cross-legged expression. This iconic piece was created by Fredrik A. Kayser, who graduated from the National Academy of Crafts and Art Industry in 1945, and designed this masterpiece during his time at Rastad & Relling Tegnekontor between 1952 and 1956.

Meticulous craftsmanship structure

Crossed legs define the chair's overall structure, creating an instantly recognizable silhouette that has stood the test of time. Darker wood nails at the joints enhance the handcrafted beauty, evidencing an attention to detail that characterizes the best of mid-century Scandinavian design.

The backrest, the defining element of the piece, extends like a sail thanks to a piece of leather sewn to the frame. This technical solution not only provides exceptional ergonomic support but also creates a fascinating visual tension between the rigidity of the wooden structure and the natural suppleness of the leather.

Timeless legacy

Designed in 1955, the Krysset armchair embodies the golden age of Nordic design. Its recovery by Eikund, a company dedicated to rescuing emblematic pieces of Norwegian heritage, allows new generations to discover and enjoy this classic that combines functionality, beauty and exceptional craftsmanship.

Krysset's apparent simplicity belies considerable technical complexity, revealing Kayser's genius for creating pieces that appear simple but require outstanding craftsmanship. This balance between the elemental and the sophisticated defines the essence of Scandinavian design and makes Krysset as relevant today as when it was conceived almost seven decades ago.

With its distinctive expression and meticulous construction, Krysset is not just an armchair; it is a statement of the core values of Nordic design: clarity, functionality, material honesty and craftsmanship excellence.

This website is dedicated to all those people who, in one way or another, have helped this project/dream/desire to begin and take shape.

Special thanks to my wife and my parents for supporting me, to Cristina Escarrà and Alfonso Pérez Rosales for generously sharing with me their experience as agents, to those clients who, in one way or another, have given me wise advice, to the brands that have placed their trust in me, and to Gonzalo, my godfather, who, with his always generous help, and guiding me throughout this process, is largely to blame for the fact that I can boast of being an “entrepreneur”.

Thanks also to Nuria, Rafa and Guillermo, who, to help me in the hard beginnings of any entrepreneurial activity, have opened the doors of their home, let me share with them a bit of their personal lives when I pass through their cities of residence, and give me free accommodation.

Thanks to all!
